Quicktips

Tips and Lessons from Ben Severson:

1) FOR CUTS ON YOUR FEET FROM FINS TRY DUCT TAPING A BAND-AID OVER THE CUT OR BLISTER AND COVER THE FOOT WITH A LYCRA SOCK. THIS WILL HELP KEEP SAND AND DIRT OUT. PUT THE SOCK ON BEFORE YOU WALK DOWN THE BEACH

2) TO AVOID TESTICLE RASH USE "SPEEDO"S" UNDER YOUR WETSUIT OR SHORTS.

3) STAND YOUR BOARD ON THE NOSE TO HELP AVOID TAIL CREASES AND DELAMINATIONS.

4) BELLY RASH AND SUNBURN CAN BE AVOIDED BY USING A LYCRA SHIRT

5) THE BIGGEST WAVES USUALLY COME IN WHILE THE TIDE IS GETTING HIGHER

6) IF YOU HAVE TO WALK ON LIVE REEF PUT YOU FINS ON UPSIDE DOWN SO THE HOLE FOR SAND DRAINAGE IS NOT LETTING REEF POKE THROUGH TO YOUR FEET.

7) IF YOUR LEASH ALWAYS GOES OVER THE NOSE OF YOUR BOARD WHEN YOU PADDLE, PUT THE LEASH PLUG IN THE CENTER AND 12 INCHES DOWN FROM THE NOSE.

8) IF YOU HAVE A HARD TIME DIPPING YOUR BOARD, TRY USING A HANDLE, AND TURN YOUR BOARD UPSIDE DOWN AND USE THE HANDLE TO PULL THE BOARD THROUGH THE WAVE.

9) TO GET RID OF THE SLIME ON THE DECK OF A NEW BOARD USE SOME WAX OR SOAP AND WATER.

10) IF YOU WANT TO REMOVE OLD WAX TRY HOT WATER AND A RAG.

11) USE NEOPRENE BOOTIES TO MAKE LOSE FINS FIT SNUGLY.

12) AS A GENERAL RULE, TO DETERMINE IF A BOARD IS THE RIGHT SIZE STAND THE BOARD ON THE TAIL, THE BOARD SHOULD COME UP TO YOUR NAVEL. ONE INCH ABOVE OR BELOW IS OK.

13) THE WAVES ARE USUALLY LESS CONSISTENT DURING PEAK HIGH AND LOW TIDES.

14) USE A PLASTIC BAG ON YOUR FEET TO MAKE PUTTING ON YOUR WETSUIT EASIER.

15) WHEN YOU BUY A PAIR OF FINS COMFORT SHOULD BE THE FIRST PRIORITY. PUT THE FINS ON AND WAIT 5-10 MINUTES TO SEE IF THEY ARE TOO TIGHT.

16) WHEN TEACHING YOUNG CHILDREN HOW TO BODYBOARD PUT A HANDLE ON ON THE BOARD FOR THE CHILD TO HOLD ON TO.

17) WHEN THE SURF IS BIG IT IS BETTER TO USE A LEASH THAT IS LONG.

18) DARK COLORED DECKS REFLECT LESS SUN IN YOUR EYES.

19) NEVER LEAVE YOUR BOARD IN A HOT CAR.

20) IF YOU GET RASH FROM YOUR WETSUIT TRY USING A LYCRA SHIRT UNDER YOUR SUIT.

21) PUT ON SUN SCREEN THIRTY MINUTES BEFORE YOU GO IN THE WATER THIS WILL GIVE IT TIME TO DRY AND SHOULD STAY ON LONGER.

22) FINS SHOULD BE CHOSEN FOR COMFORT ABOVE EVERYTHING.

23) THIRTY MINUTES OF DIRECT SUN LIGHT CAN CHANGE THE ROCKER OF YOUR BOARD.

24) PUT THE LEASH PLUG 10 INCHES DOWN FROM THE NOSE TO HELP KEEP YOUR LEASH FROM GOING OVER THE NOSE WHEN YOU PADDLE.

25) HEAT A SCREW DRIVER WITH FIRE BEFORE USING IT TO MAKE A HOLE IN YOUR BOARD, FOR A LEASH PLUG. THIS WILL HELP TO SEAL THE FOAM, REDUCING WATER ABSORPTION AND MAKE IT EASIER TO MAKE THE HOLE AND,

26) WHEN INSTALLING A LEASH PLUG, FILL THE HOLE WITH SPONGREZ TO REDUCE WATER ABSORPTION

27) TO RELIEVE SUN BURN PUT A WET CLOTH IN THE FREEZER FOR 15 MIN. THEN APPLY THE COLD CLOTH TO THE SUN BURNED AREA, REPEAT 3-4 TIMES.
