TO UNDERSTAND WHERE WE WILL GO FROM HERE WE MUST KNOW WHERE WE CAME  FROM, THE DESIGN AND MATERIALS USED TO MAKE A BOARD HAVE MADE GRATE ADVANCEMENTS SINCE THE 1970’S. THE LENGTH OF THE FIRST BOARDS WERE DETERMINED BY THE MAXIMUM SIZE ALLOWED TO BE SHIPPED IN THE POST (US MAIL) AND THE SKINS WERE DISCARDED MATERIAL FROM ANOTHER FOAM PRODUCT.

BOARDS WERE GLUED TOGETHER INSTEAD OF HEAT LAMINATED.  THESE WERE THE FIRST BOARDS, TODAY BOARDS ARE DESIGNED WITH THE RIDER IN MIND, AND MATERIALS ARE DEVELOPED SPECIFICALLY FOR BODYBOARDS. MOST OF THE COMPANIES HAVE INVESTED LARGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY TO MANUFACTURE BOARDS WITH THESE MATERIALS.  SO, MUCH OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW MATERIALS IS FOCUSED ON THE ABILITY FOR THE NEW MATERIALS TO BE COMPATIBLE WITH WHAT IS IN PRODUCTION NOW. THIS IS WHAT IS HAPPENING TODAY. 

NEW MATERIALS 
TO DEVELOP NEW MATERIALS REQUIRES LARGE AMOUNTS OF MONEY, KNOWLEDGE OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING AND A COMPANY WITH THE  ABILITY TO MANUFACTURE IT.  THESE REQUIREMENTS LIMIT THE ABILITY OF MOST BODYBOARD COMPANIES TO DEVELOP MATERIALS. WITH OUT ANY NEW MATERIALS THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEW DESIGNS WILL BE LIMITED. THE BASIC CONSTRUCTION OF BOARDS WILL NEED TO CHANGE IF BOARDS ARE TO BECOME MORE PERSONALIZED AND PERFORMANCE ORIENTED.  THE NEW MATERIALS WILL CONFORM TO THE CORE SHAPE MAKING IT POSSIBLE TO SHAPE VERY INTRICATE DESIGNS.  THE CORES WILL BE WATER PROOF AND HAVE PERFECT RECOIL.  BOARDS WILL LAST MUCH LONGER AND TAKE MORE ABUSE. 

CUSTOM BOARDS 
EVERY ONE CAN LEARN TO RIDE WAVES ON A STOCK BOARD BUT ONCE YOU HAVE LEARNED THE BASICS OF RIDING YOUR ABILITY TO PROGRESS WILL BE DETERMINED BY THE BOARD YOU RIDE.  TO INCREASE YOUR LEARNING CURVE YOU MUST HAVE A BOARD DESIGNED FOR YOU! TO ME THIS IS THE FUTURE OF BODYBOARDS, BUT UNTIL THE RIDERS DEMAND THE HIGHEST PERFORMANCE FROM THERE EQUIPMENT THE FEW CUSTOM BOARD MAKERS WILL HAVE A HARD TIME SURVIVING. THERE ARE MANY BOARDS ON THE MARKET THAT WILL SUIT MOST RIDERS AND I AM SURE THAT IF YOU WERE ABLE TO LOOK AT EVERY BOARD MODEL PRODUCED IN THE WORLD YOU COULD FIND JUST WHAT YOU NEED.  

DESIGNS: TAILS, RAILS, BOTTOMS

TAILS

THE TAIL DESIGN AFFECTS THE SPEED, CONTROL AND MANEUVERABILITY OF A BOARD.

IN THE FUTURE RIDERS WILL HAVE BOARDS DESIGNED FOR DIFFERENT KINDS OF WAVES.  AGAIN MATERIALS WILL DETERMINE WHAT CAN BE MADE.  THE TAIL DESIGNS

OF DROPKNEE BOARDS WILL BE SOME OF THE MORE INTERESTING SHAPES, THEY WILL

ALLOW RIDERS TO SURF BIGGER WAVES WITH MORE CONTROL. THE TAILS ON PRONE

BOARDS WILL BE DESIGNED AROUND THE THREE DIMENSIONAL MANEUVERS, THE TAILS WILL  ALLOW FOR MORE PROJECTION AND MANEUVERABILITY,  THE TAILS FOR BOARDS

USER FOR PRONE AND DROPKNEE WILL HAVE TO BE VERSATILE BUT TO REALLY IMPROVE THE DESIGNS AND PERFORMANCE, BOARD SHOULD BE DESIGNED FOR EITHER DK OR PRONE. 

RAILS

THE NEW  RAIL DESIGNS WILL BE THE HARDEST PART TO MANUFACTURE IN LARGE AMOUNTS AND CONSISTENTLY. FOR ME THE TRANSITIONAL RAIL IS THE FIRST STEP TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A HIGH PERFORMANCE RAIL. IN THE FUTURE RAILS WILL BE FOILED THE RAIL SHAPE WILL CHANGE FROM THE NOSE TO THE TAIL. MOST OF THE BOARDS ON THE MARKET HAVE RAILS DESIGNED WITH MANUFACTURING IN MIND FIRST

THIS TYPE OF DESIGNING WILL CHANGE AS RIDERS LEARN WHAT THEY NEED TOO SURF BETTER AND DEMAND BETTER DESIGNS.  YOU PAY FOR WHAT YOU GET. 

BOTTOM DESIGNS

BOTTOM DESIGNS ARE LIMITED THE MOST BY MATERIALS. THE THICKNESS OF SKINS AND HEAT LAMINATION LIMIT CHANNEL DESIGNS AND OTHER CONTOURS,

ALSO THE CORES POLYETHYLENE CORES DON’T HOLD THE SHAPES LIKE “V” BOTTOMS AND OTHER SLIGHT CONTOUR DESIGNS.  THE BOARDS OF THE FUTURE WILL HAVE

VERY THIN SKINS THAT WONT CHANGE THE  CONTOURS SHAPED INTO THE CORE.

CORES WILL MAINTAIN ROCKER AND ALLOW  DETAILED DESIGNS TO BE SHAPED INTO THEM.  THE DESIGNS WILL FOCUS ON MANEUVERABILITY AND CONTROL.  THERE ARE SO MANY DESIGNS TO BE TESTED I FEEL THIS AREA WILL PROVIDE THE LARGEST ARENA FOR FUTURE DESIGN DEVELOPMENTS. 

IN THE FUTURE SERIOUS RIDERS WILL GET THERE BOARDS CUSTOM MADE. THE RIDERS WILL LEARN WHAT WORKS BEST FOR THEM AND NEW AND OLD DESIGNS WILL BLEND TOGETHER.  DESIGNS FROM 10 YEARS AGO WILL COME INTO FASHION AND BE MIXED WITH NEW TECHNOLOGY.  RIDING STYLES WILL CHANGE AND NEW DEMANDS WILL INFLUENCE NEW DESIGNS.  THIS IS HOW MOST PRODUCT PROGRESS BUT UNLESS YOU THE CONSUMER BEGIN TO DEMAND BOARDS DESIGNED BY BODYBOARDERS AND SEEK OUT CUSTOM BOARD BUILDERS THE LARGE COMPANIES WILL KEEP FEEDING THE PUBLIC BOARDS THAT ARE EASY TO MAKE RATHER THAN BOARDS THAT ARE EASY TO RIDE. I HAVE NOT GONE INTO MUCH DETAIL ON THE EXACT DESIGNS OF THE FUTURE

BECAUSE MY IDEAS ARE COPIED BY COMPANIES THAT DON’T KNOW ANY THING ABOUT HOW TO MAKE HIGH PERFORMANCE BOARDS SO YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT TO SEE WHAT BSD WILL DO NEXT.
